Question 1:

  • A particle moves in one dimension from rest under the influence of a force that varies with the distance travelled by the particle as shown in the figure. The kinetic energy of the particle after it has travelled 3 m is

  • A)

    2.5 J 2.5\text{\ }J

    B)

    6.5 J 6.5\text{\ }J

    C)

    5 J 5\text{\ }J

    D)

    4 J 4\text{\ }J

    Answer:

    Solution:

    As work done by force = = change in K.E. of the particle

    From the graph,

    When distance = 2 m = 2\text{\ }m , Force = 2 N = 2\text{\ }N

    When distance = 3 m = 3\text{\ }m , Force = 3 N = 3\text{\ }N

    Work done by the force on the particle will be area under the curve F vs x

    W = 2 × 2 + 1 / 2 ( 2 + 3 ) × ( 3 2 ) = 6.5 J W = 2 \times 2 + 1/2(2 + 3) \times (3 - 2) = 6.5\text{\ }J

    W = Δ K = K f K i W = \Delta K = K_{f} - K_{i}

    (Here K i = 0 ) \left. \ K_{i} = 0 \right)

    K f = 6.5 J \therefore K_{f} = 6.5\text{\ }J
